FIRST STEP - PILOT PROJECTThe first logical step to initiate the observational program is a Pilot Project (summer 2002), which would test international connections and provide necessary experience for the full-scale field program. As an initial stage of the NABOS/CABOS, the Pilot Project has several goals. The Pilot Project will provide preliminary information about circulation and water mass transformation at several locations of the Eurasian Basin (Figure) and Canadian Basin (Figure). It will test international connections and provide necessary experience for the full-scale field program. We plan to use the Pilot Program to establish channels for getting Russian permits and customs arrangements. During the Pilot Project the core team of scientists and technicians will be assembled. In summer 2002 we plan to deploy two NABOS moorings (Figure) and one CABOS mooring off Banks Island (Figure, northern mooring marked as MMP-2002) for one year. We have a permission from Russian authorities for CTD survey in Russian EEZ northward of the Laptev Sea during our NABOS summer cruise (our NABOS moorings to be deployed in summer 2002 are away of Russian EEZ and do not require permission). Russian icebreaker ``Kapitan Dranitsyn'' will be used in NABOS cruise (See the Ship). Canadian icebreaker ``Louis S. St.-Laurent'' will deploy our CABOS mooring (See the Ship). This icebreaker will be also used to recover the IARC first mooring which has been deployed in summer 2001 in the Beaufort Sea (Figure, southern mooring marked as MMP-2001) as a prototype of our future moorings. |
